We recommend leaving the 'Photo size' set to 'High quality free unlimited storage. If auto-uploading and backing up your photos and videos from your computer is too extreme, you can always manually upload photos by going to photos.
Alternatively, you can drag and drop files or folders directly into Google Photos to upload them. To download Flickr photos, select the ones you want under the Camera Roll tab and click the 'Download' button located at the bottom of the screen. Once the zip folder containing the photos is downloaded, unzip it and manually upload the folder or individual files into Google Photos, as outlined above in the manual upload section.
Like Flickr, there's no direct way to import your photos from Facebook to Google Photos. Getting your photos off Facebook is also more of a hassle. You've got two options: 1 manually download all the photos you want and re-upload to Google Photos or 2 download all of your Facebook data, locate your photos and videos, and then re-upload to Google Photos. The latter will get you all your Facebook photos, but the process of downloading all your Facebook data takes an eternity.
The situation is similar to getting your photos from other cloud services into Google Photos. You'll need to download pictures and videos to a computer and then re-upload them manually into Google Photos. We know, it's time-consuming — and figuring out how to download all photos and videos can be a real pain if there's no 'download all' button.

Google has a handy tool for 'scanning' your old printed photos directly into your collection via your phone's camera. Google Photos may generally be a cloud-centric service, but if you feel more comfortable keeping a local copy of your entire image collection, there is a way. Make sure it's set up to sync everything in your Drive to a folder on your computer.
Next, head to the Drive website, click the gear icon in the upper-right corner, select 'Settings' and then check the box next to 'Create a Google Photos folder. And since you already have Drive set to sync with your computer, that folder will always remain backed up and synced -- both ways -- with your corresponding local folder. Photos makes it easy to share your images with anyone -- whether they use the service themselves or not. You can then click other images to add to your selection. Holding shift when you click will also allow you to highlight batches of snaps between the first and last shots you select. Google will compress your chosen shots into a single zip archive, ready for saving.
From June , Google will also offer a free storage management tool to help you find and delete shots that are underexposed or blurry, which should make it easier to pick through pictures to find your favorites. Use the search bar to filter your images — such as by location or date — then pick from the results. This makes it easy to save similar images, such as ones from the same place. This will compress all of the images and videos contained in the album into a single zip file for you to download.
